Games from 2005 Pikes Peak Open Selected by Richard Buchanan Wutt,Earl (1457) - Ponomarev,Mikhail (2200) [ Notes by Earl Wutt] This game, against the strongest player I have yet faced in tournament play, shows the benefit of active piece play verses hunkering down with no activity while the opponent digs you out of your hole. The tournament was the Pikes Peak Open in Manitou Springs, CO on 8/7-8/8/05. Time control of 40/90 game 60. 1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 Bf5 This takes me out of my preferred opening play, which is either a Torre or Colle. I have limited knowelge of openings and had to improvise from here. c4 seemed to be the only way to keep an advantage. 3.c4 e6 4.Nc3 Nc6 I was somewhat surprised that he played this instead of Nf6. I thought long about 5.Qb3 but felt 5...Na5 6.Qa4+ c6 didn't gain a thing and my Queen was misplaced on a4. I also wanted to develop my c1 bishop before playing e3. 5.Bf4 Nf6 6.cxd5 exd5 7.e3 a6 This move seems overly cautious to me, especially when he is rated amost 750 points higher than I. 8.a3 Wanting to keep his bishop and/or knight out of b4. 8...Be7 9.Be2 0-0 10.0-0 Re8 Placing his rook actively on the half open e-file. I decided to activate my rook as well. 11.Rc1 Bd6 Again, somewhat surprised he wished to trade for my bad but active dark bishop. 12.Bxd6 Qxd6 13.Nh4 I had trouble formulating a plan here and decided to force him to relenquish the b1-a7 diagonal. His response further surprised me. 13...Be4 14.Nxe4 Nxe4 15.Nf5 Qd7 Allowing me to further harass his Queen. 16.Bg4 Qd8 17.Rc2 I spent 9 minutes trying to come up with a plan, finally deciding that perhaps I could double my rooks on the c-file and free my queen from defending d2. 17...g6 18.Ng3 My aggression on the K-side forces me to retreat and allow the doubling of pawns. Another surprised when he didn't take the knight. 18...Nf6 19.Bf3 Kg7 20.Ne2 I didn't understand his previous move but felt my knight would be better placed on f4. 20...Ne7 21.Nf4 c6 22.h4 Prior to this tournament I asked my brother, an 1800 player, to look at my recent games and help me improve. His main advice was to stop being so passive and look towards making things happen. I took this advice and decided to attack his advanced g-pawn. 22...Nf5 23.h5 Qd6 24.Qd3 I see his queenside somewhat weak and wish to allow my queen into play if possible. 24...Ne4 25.g3 Not liking a knight on h4. I'm starting to be concerned about his attack, and I'm down to 17 minutes left before time control in another 15 moves. 25...Qf6 26.Bxe4 Rxe4 27.Qb3 Normally I would have hunkered down and played defense, however this time I attacked instead. 27...Rb8 28.Rfc1 Nd6? Another move that surprised me. I'm feeling pretty good now and proceeded with my attack. 29.Rxc6 bxc6 30.Qxb8 g5? I see nothing productive with moving my knight, so I take the pawn. 31.Rxc6 gxf4 32.Rxd6 fxe3 I'm down to 3 minutes for my next seven moves and I am not a blitz player. I felt that I had to eliminate his pawn and stop it from queening. In hindsight I should have taken his queen. 33.fxe3 [33.Rxf6 e2 34.Rxa6 e1Q+ 35.Kg2 The pawn on h5 threatens mate, so Black must play either Re6 or Re8. Re6 would force the trading of Rooks and Queens and a simple win for White, while Re8 plays on with difficulties. 35...Re6 (35...Re8 36.h6+ Kf8 37.Qd6+ Qe7 38.Qxd5) 36.Rxe6 Qxe6 (36...fxe6 37.Qe5+) 37.Qe5+] 33...Re6 34.Rxd5? Very low on time, I moved too fast. 34.Rxe6 Qxe6 35.Qe5+ leaves white once again with a winning advantage. 34...Rxe3 Now I have an isolated d-pawn and he has a strong attack. 35.Qf4 Qxf4 36.gxf4 I isolate another pawn but felt I had to stop his queen from participating in the attack. 36...Rb3 And now I lose the b-pawn and isolate my last connected pawn. I'm depressed after losing the advantage, but I hang on for the draw. 37.Ra5 Rxb2 38.Rxa6 Rd2 39.h6+ Kf8 40.Rd6 I made time control with 11 seconds left on my clock. Better time management may have resulted in fewer questionable moves. 40...Ke7 41.Rd5 Ra2 42.Ra5 Rd2 43.Ra4 Kf6 44.Rb4 Kg6 45.a4 Kxh6 46.a5 Ra2 47.Rb5 Kg6 48.d5 Kf5 49.d6+ Ke6 50.Rd5 A "cheapo" that made my opponent smile. 50...Kd7 [50...Kxd5 51.d7 And the pawn can't be stopped.] 51.Rf5 Kxd6 52.Rxf7 Rxa5 53.Rxh7 Rf5 54.Rh4 Kd5 55.Kf2 Ke4 56.Kg3 1/2-1/2 Leo Sotaridona - Robert Zing , Sicilian 1.e4 c5 2.Nc3 Nc6 3.g3 g6 4.Bg2 Bg7 5.d3 d6 6.Be3 Nf6 7.h3 Be6?! 8.Nge2 0-0 9.Qd2 a6 10.0-0 Rb8 11.g4 Qc7 12.Ng3 b5 13.Bh6 Rfd8 14.Bxg7 Kxg7 15.f4 Bc8 16.g5 Ne8 17.Nd5 Qd7 18.f5 f6 19.fxg6 hxg6 20.gxf6+ Nxf6 21.Qg5 Qe8 22.Rxf6!
